Somebody sewed every one of them.

Every one of them has a spiral somewhere: an eye, a wheel, the grain of a belly. Whoever made them put it there to keep hold of something that had already gone.

She made somebody a tape once, timed off the radio with her finger over the button. She still knows every song on it, in order. She never handed it over.

There is nothing on her skates to stop with. So she learned to fall instead, and to be quick about it. Up again before anyone can ask.

HOLLOW BELLE

Keeps a candle lit all night for the same reason somebody left the hall light on for you. She would not say so.

BOOMBEAU

He puts the radio on every night, low, and lets it play. He does not dance to it. He just thinks the attic is better with something in it.

Comes back when the streetlight comes on. That is the whole clock. Nobody knows where he is. Nobody worries.

DANDELION MEND

She keeps one button off a coat that doesn’t exist any more. Her jar says Buttons Fix Wishes. The jar is still full.

STATIC

Six in the morning, volume on two, until the screen goes to that long flat tone. Nobody makes him get up.

Held the top score all summer. The machine went in September before anyone wrote the number down. He never found out if it would have stood.

Three stories about a bunny on roller skates with no way to stop: learning to fall where people can see, learning to be a beginner, and learning that quitting is a kind of stopping.

Written and finished. Being illustrated now.

The attic’s own soundtrack. A music box, a synth-pop theme, a boom-bap cue, a rink parade, and fifteen more. Every note of it built from scratch, so it is ours to give away.
